ROV Project
Exploration Plan

2025 Season Plans
We explore diverse marine environments using remote operated vehicles (ROVs), allowing us to observe and document these ecosystems. As we venture through each season, we also aim to raise awareness and support for local nonprofits. As we enhance our equipment, we plan to expand the scope of our exploration, with each season bringing new areas of focus that grow alongside our experience. Our journey began in the freshwater systems of Southern Ontario, starting with Emsdale Lake.
This season we are looking to review the permit requirements for Lake Simcoe and planning to submit a filming proposal for Algonquin Park in 2026. Pending the park’s review, this would allow us to explore underwater with our ROV during our regular seasonal backcountry camping trips. Currently, we do not dive our ROV in Algonquin Park during these trips as it is prohibited without a valid permit.

What do we do while we explore?
On our dives, we map the depth and take a close look at the underwater landscape. With sonar technology, we’re able to navigate safely, create 2D depth maps of the terrain, and find spots where marine life thrives. We share these maps with the fishing community to help them fish more sustainably.
Currently, we’re raising funds to support the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) in their important work of rescuing, protecting, and studying Ontario’s native turtles. To learn more about the OTCC and the ROV that helps us carry out our mission, check out the links below.
Health and Safety Responsibility
Likewise, we also adhere to all requirements outlined in the Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide for watercraft. This includes usage of a PFD for all on board, a sound signaling device, bailer, bilge pump and rope. We also carry a satellite phone with us at all times in the event of an emergency. As our experience and focus evolves, we plan to purchase additional equipment required To learn more about these guidelines, download the guide as provided by Government of Canada.
Preventing the Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species
During our adventures, we comply with the Best Management Practices for Preventing the Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species: Guidance for watercraft users as directed by Ontario Parks and the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry. This includes extensive cleaning of our equipment, vehicle and canoe prior to and after preplanned trips to prevent the spread of invasive species between bodies of water.
